Morels do not follow a date, they follow the ground warming up. That warming crosses Michigan from south to north over about five weeks, and this tracks where the front edge of it is right now, region by region, against what is normal for the date.

This site tells you when to look. It will never tell you what is safe to eat. False morels grow in the same woods at the same time of year and people are hospitalised by them in Michigan every spring. Some contain gyromitrin, which can cause severe poisoning and has killed people.

Every experienced hunter says a version of the same thing: the date on the calendar is a rough guide and the ground is the real answer. Morels fruit when the soil at a few inches settles into roughly the low to mid fifties, and they do it a few days after rain. A warm March pulls the whole season forward. A cold snap in late April stops it dead and then restarts it.
That is why a fixed date is close to useless across a state this long. Michigan runs more than four hundred miles south to north, and the same trigger arrives about five weeks apart at the two ends. In 2026 the modelled window opened in southern Michigan around the middle of April and did not reach the Upper Peninsula until the third week of May.
